Try Some New Music!
Stuck in a music rut? It happens. After listening to your favorite song 1,379,614 times, you will, eventually, get sick of it. So you find a new favorite song, all too aware that you'll soon grow as tired of it as your previous pick. This is even more likely to happen when you only listen to one type of music, a habit I've never subscribed to and have a very hard time wrapping my mind around (my mind's not big enough to stretch that far). With all of the wonderful types of music available, why limit yourself to one or two genres? Do yourself a favor and start branching out. Sure, you love country music, but is it really going to kill you to listen to some R&B? Or maybe you're all about hip-hop - who's to say you won't find a rock song you like just as well? I'm always so impressed when I hear someone list their favorite songs - and the songs actually cover several genres. Or decades! (Yes, oldies are goodies.) Next time you hear your fave song come on the radio (you know, the one you've heard over a million times), consider actually turning away from it. Head over to the station you listen to the LEAST - your new favorite song might be waiting for you. :) Visit my music blog, Striking a Chord, at http://www.thepianopages.com/blog. Feel free to leave any comments, news, rants, or raves. Hope to see you there!

Arranging for New Age Piano A while back, I wrote an article that compared flower arranging to music arranging. While this may seem a world apart, it really isn't. What is Music? That's a fair question!Basically, you can call music any noise that is set to either a rythm as in percussions or that follows a melodic line of some sort. Our early ancestors sitting outside the cave by the fire, after a hard day of gathering and hunting food, probably made music by tapping bones together or blowing in sea shells. How to Create Hip, Mature and Lush Harmonies Rarely is a chord played with its tones contained in a single octave, the root on the bottom, the third in the middle, and the fifth on the top.Usually chords are "voiced!"This basically means that the positions of a chord's tones are scattered over the keyboard. Do you ever feel there is an inner voice speaking to you, telling you that you're not very good, or you can't do it, or there's just not enough confidence and repertoire with you? This is the voice that calls itself "I" right? Let's refer to this as Self 1, and Self 2 as the normal you, the real you that has the masses of potential.Self 1 is our interference and concepts such as our judgements, associations, how things should be and uses words such as "should" and "shouldn't". Quick and Easy Violin Mute One of the reasons I picked up the violin was because it was easier to travel with than a guitar (not that I haven't found some nice travel guitars, but that's another story). It fits in an airplane overhead and is easy to carry! However, I want to be considerate of the folks in the rooms around me when I'm playing in my hotel room. Irish Fiddle Ornaments When I started playing jigs, my default bowing pattern made a groove like Pop Goes the Weasel: "Long-short, long-short, muberry bush, the long-short, long-short weasel."And that still works for me without having to think about it.
